The story

Ellie Abela’s life has been anything but easy. Tragedy follows her where ever she goes, and she’s been a lot of places. At twenty she’s lived in over ten different states, all because of her dad’s career in medical research. His career is just another list of the causes of tragedies in El’s life. He’s dying, and with every breath he takes closer to Heaven, Ellie dies a little bit inside too.At twelve she lost her mom in a drunk driving accident, and in a matter of months she fears she’ll lose the last person she has in the world to cancer.

While Ellie’s life has been rife with sadness, Trent Wentworth’s has been a challenge. A drug-addicted mom and a dead-beat dad meant at twenty three he was the adoptive father of his two year old sister. Now at twenty five he’s working his way up the corporate ladder and a struggling single parent.

Each is searching for a cure to the things in their lives dragging them down.

Not all cures are black and white; not all cures save us–and sometimes saving isn’t what we need. Sometimes we just need to realize how lucky we are to be alive, at least for this moment.

My review

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Finding the Cure deals with one of the most difficult subjects for me to read about : the illness and loss of a parent. Probably because it is one of my deepest fears in life. Watching someone you love struggle with sickness is not a light subject. I started reading this book fearing for my heart, and I was right. Deep down, you know what’s going to happen, inevitable, but you can’t help hoping it won’t.

But Finding the Cure is above all a story about love. Different forms of love : a developing love between Ellie and Trent, and of course parental love… between Ellie and her father, but also between Trent and Allie, his little sister.

The book alternates between the happy romantic scenes of Ellie and Trent’s growing love story and the heartbreaking parts about her father, in this bittersweet story.

There’s only one tiny negative point about this book for me… the “hot” scene. Or more like the disappearance of it. The way this scene was handled felt quite weird. It ended too abruptly, to jump to the scene right after. I understand the concept of “clean NA” but it felt like there was something missing there, and I think it could have been handled in a different way.

I really love Cassandra Giovanni’s easily recognizable, enjoyable writing. It is efficient but remains poetic… I love the way she creates such credible characters you can’t help falling in love with.

I highly recommend this beautiful book to all romance lovers, who should not be disappointed. I wasn’t!

The story

Jackie Davenport will try anything once, especially in the bedroom. Anything except falling in love. She lives a carefree existence packed full of fun, but free from emotional entanglements and that’s just how she wants to keep it. When she meets the new police officer in town, she’s unable to deny the connection between them. His over confidence and bullish ways grate on her…still she can’t help but find herself falling into his bed AND falling for him.

Jamie McTavish is man enough to admit that he probably didn’t make the best first impression when he met the 911 Operator. That doesn’t mean there isn’t still sizzling sexual tension between them. He’s a man of action and he’s not content to sit on the sidelines until Jackie works out her issues. But trying to tame this tiger might be too big of a challenge for even him.

Excerpt :

I pulled the cruiser into Jackie’s driveway. What the hell was wrong with me? It was only yesterday that I’d gotten her off and yet here I was, sitting unannounced in her driveway like a stalker. If I’d thought it difficult to get her off my mind before, what had happened in the wine cellar had made it damn near impossible.

Everyone I’d talked to had said the same thing—that she’d turned down each and every cop or fireman that had asked her out. No one was sure if she was just trying to keep her personal life outside of the work environment or what, but I intended to find out. The insane pull between us didn’t leave me any other choice.

With a sigh, I unbuckled my seatbelt and glanced at the small bungalow. It was cute with white siding and black shutters. Hanging baskets of colorful flowers hung from hooks around the veranda and a kickass bicycle was leaning against the side of the house. That helped to explain why she had such a firm ass.

I opened the door to the cruiser when the front door of the house burst open, and Jackie stood there frozen, her hand held to her chest and such an expression of fear on her face that I bolted out of the car and up the front steps.

“What’s wrong?” I demanded as soon as I was in front of her.

“Wh-what are you doing here?” she asked in barely a whisper.

I relaxed a fraction once it was clear she was okay. “I figured you could use a lift to Don’s place for your car. Didn’t think you would’ve driven home last night.” I shrugged. “It’s been quiet today, so I popped by to see if you wanted me to drive you over.”

She released a pent-up breath and relief washed over her face. “Oh, thank God.”

I frowned and gripped her upper arms. “What’s going on? Everything okay?”

She glanced down at where my hands lay on her soft skin and looked back up to me, blinking twice.

“It’s nothing. When I saw the cruiser in the driveway…never mind.” She shook her head.

I studied her for a moment. She was sexy just rolling out of bed with her hair thrown in a messy bun and last night’s make-up still on her face. “You sure?”

She nodded and her eyes flicked down to my hands once more. “Why are you always touching me whenever I see you?” Her voice had come out all breathy, not at all convincing me that she didn’t like my hands right where they were.

I grazed her collarbones with my thumbs, causing goose bumps to form on her skin. “I think you know exactly why.”

About the author

jocoby

Annie Jocoby is the author of 8 contemporary romance novels and 3 New Adult contemporary romance novels. Her motivation to begin writing these novels is that she was interested in writing about rich men who actually love and respect their women. Her heroes are alpha and damaged, yet also genuinely good guys.

Ryan, Nick, Luke and Asher are all complicated characters who have experienced plenty of darkness, yet always seek the light. They would all go to the ends of the earth to protect the women they love. And they’re all sexy, enigmatic, magnetic and great in bed.

All of Annie’s books have things in common: they all combine a touch of mystery and intrigue with drama, love, and lots of hot sex. Some of the books have action and even some criminal elements in them. Her current book, in fact, is her first book that would be classified as straight romantic suspense, although it also combines definite elements of the thriller genre! If you’re in the market for a book that is fast-paced, where the heroes are beautiful and wealthy, and the heroines are strong, vulnerable and flawed, then try these books out!

Excerpt

The real reason why I was so reluctant to tell him what happened to me was that I was ashamed. I was so ashamed of what I did. There wasn’t a moment of a day when I wasn’t filled with shame and regret. I beat myself up constantly, and I knew, I just knew, that this man would judge me. He would think that I was a horrible person.

And he would be absolutely right.

He was still looking at me, with those beautiful blue eyes. I was getting goose pimples on my flesh, and my brain wouldn’t turn off. I was still mentally undressing him, and I could tell that his body was as sexy as the rest of him. He was dressed in a dress shirt, but I could see the outline of his pecs, abs and arms through the fabric.

And his scent was intoxicating. It was soap and cologne and pure, pure man. He licked his lips, and I had to admit that I wanted them to be on me. On my body. All over my body. And, especially, on my lips. I just knew that he was an amazing kisser and I also knew that he would know just how to make me come.

Why was I thinking this? After all, this was the man who virtually kidnapped me.

Granted, he was a perfect gentleman, so far, and he was going out of his way to make sure I got home okay. But, nonetheless, he was responsible for my being across town, away from my safety zone.

He looked disappointed that I wasn’t going to tell him what had happened to me.

But then he, quietly, let me know that he already knew.

“CJ,” he said. “I wanted you to tell me what caused you to seclude yourself, but I already know.”

Of course he knew. He was a reasonably intelligent guy, and I was sure that he read the newspaper and listened to the news. If he did, then he knew what had happened. Everybody did.

“Well, then,” I began. “Now that you know what kind of a person I am, I’m quite sure that this will be the last I’ll be seeing of you. And you really should have said something earlier to let me know that you already knew what kind of a tragedy I’ve experienced.”

His eyes were now looking sympathetic. “I certainly hope that this is not the last time I see you.” His face was so close to mine, I thought, for just a moment, he was going to kiss me. I closed my eyes, and bit my bottom lip.

“Perhaps you hope to see me again, but I really don’t think that you’re going to. But I thank you for at least not recoiling in horror in being around the likes of me.”

He took a deep breath. “CJ,” he said. “What happened to you wasn’t your fault. I hope that you believe that. And your panic disorder can be overcome. I know that from personal experience.”

I looked down at my hands. “Thanks for your words, but they’re not doing any good. And you can’t just tell me to stop blaming myself and hope that your words will get through to me.”

It was then that I looked out the window and saw that my apartment building was looming right in front of me.

“Thanks,” I said, “for getting me home.”

“I’m going to walk you into your apartment.”

“No,” I said. “I’ve got this.” I really didn’t, and, to be honest, the sedative was causing my legs to feel weak. At least, I told myself it was the sedative. In reality, I knew that this man was responsible for my sudden feeling of weakness. My body was feeling weak, and my spirit was certainly feeling weak. I felt like unbuttoning his shirt with my teeth. I got out of the limo, and my legs gave way.

Then, to my sheer embarrassment, Asher was right beside me, and he scooped me up in his strong arms. In spite of myself, I wrapped my arms around his neck, and put my head on his beating chest.

“Fair warning,” I said.

“I live on the fourth floor. And there’s no elevator.”

“I got this,” he said in a low voice.

And he did. He walked up all four flights of stairs without ever breaking a sweat.

We got to my apartment, and I turned to him, and held out my hand.

“Thank you, Asher,” I said.

He bowed his head and smiled.

“I’ll be seeing you.”

And, in spite of myself, I really wished that he was right about that.

Excerpt :

I wrapped my fingers around the steering wheel, and it squeaked with the pressure as my knuckles turned white. The sound echoed through the car as my grip continued to tighten. I used to wonder if it was harder to know you’re going to die, or just dying without the ability to say goodbye. The tears began to stream down my face as I sped down the highway. The guardrails were just silver blurs as I hammered the gas.
I shouldn’t have wondered it. My life was cruel punishment for the thought. The question should’ve been what’s harder, never getting to say goodbye or knowing that every breath could be goodbye?
My chin trembled as my eyes fell to the speedometer.
I was going too fast.
The highway was too straight; a never ending path in front of me that I wanted to drive on until I fell off the edge of the Earth.
I already had, hadn’t I?
My eyes lashes fluttered, the drops of tears weighing them down.
Never getting to say goodbye.
I knew that evil. God, did I know that evil. The look on Dad’s face as the phone slipped from his hands, the words forming at his lips never reaching my ears.
I read them.
I knew them.
The shock hit my body, and I desperately wanted to feel something–anything besides the rolling waves of pain. That numbness weighted down my limbs as the physical ache coursed through my veins. The anger and pain crushed down on me until my chest was so tight I couldn’t breath. Then I had Dad– he was always there, despite his own pain. His warmth overtook the shocking cold of loss. He broke the edges that hardened on my soul.
Knowing that every breath could be goodbye.
Now.
That was now.
I lifted my foot off the gas, letting the car slow until I pulled over and stopped. My head dipped between my shoulders as my chest heaved with a sob. I let my hands drop to my lap, red lines marking them where my skin had met too tightly with itself. The tears puddled in my palms.
I knew he was going to die. There was nothing that could stop it. I had to watch it. The pillar of strength when Mom died was withering into nothing in front of my eyes. The numbness that hit me when Mom died was a constant part of my life; it never left. I had just gotten better at hiding it. The chains around what was left of my heart tightened with each passing day. Each day meant there was one less breath. Who would save me now?
My eyes rose to the black sky above me.
There was no cure for Dad.
There was no cure for me.

Review – In Between Seasons by Cassandra Giovanni

InBS

Publication date: July 31, 2014
Category: New Adult Post-Apocalytic Romance Series

The story

In 2021 the world as we know it changed. The government collapsed, and the worst characteristics of human nature were shown as the world fell into ruins. Years after The Fall, the Tribes that were established are still at war. They still fight to keep what they pillaged, and most of all, they fight to keep their lies a secret. In a world filled with deception, nothing is as it seems.

I was born into this world.

Hunter Marks was molded into this world; a General— a person cold and harsh. A person meant to kill me.

We were told to just believe.

We were taught to never question.

We’re supposed to be robots, and accept our roles in this altered society.

Too bad Hunter and I don’t follow the rules.

And we’re a hell of a lot stronger than they ever thought possible.

They’ve been searching for the world’s deadliest weapon.

It’s me.

And I’m not following the leader any more.

The review

5 stars!

I loved the concept of this dystopian world. I found it plausible, yet original. Discovering this world through the eyes of Kate, who’s always been lied about, and is desperately seeking the truth about the world she lives in but knows nothing about, was a brilliant way to include the reader in the story.

I feel Cassandra succeeded in giving us just the right amount of details about the life in the Tribes to enjoy and understand fully the story but without giving too much information, which might have drawn attention away from what this book is really about: the pursuit of the truth, and of course the relationship between Kate and Hunter.

“No one has ever told me the truth, Hunet. That’s all I want. I just want to know the truth. I don’t care what it is. I need to know, and you’re the only one who knows it.”

That being said, so much remains to explore in the following installments of the series, that you can’t help but look forward to the second book.
There is no cliffhanger though, which is really appreciable to me… and anyway, you don’t need one to want to know what happens next!

I found the love story between Kate and Hunter incredibly well written. I loved how it started with immediate attraction, but then developed slowly throughout the book, to become something way more important. As usual, Cassandra succeeds in creating characters that you can’t help falling in love with. *insert swoon here*

“I’ve never had a reason to survive-no reason to question the way things were. I lived because I was told to… now I live because I want to. I survive because I want to know what is outside the deception we’re buried in, and I want to experience it with you. You’re the only person I’ve ever trusted, and now you’re the reason I’m going to fight.”

The rhythm of the book was perfect to me, alternating cleverly action scenes, life with the Tribe and scenes with Kate and Hunter alone, and I just couldn’t put it down.

I think this is my favorite book from Cassandra so far, and I do feel that her novels just keep better and better… So, can’t wait for the next one :)

My review

3.5 stars!

A romance between Emberly, an American attorney and Nico, the Italian tennis star… I was a little afraid at the beginning of the book, as it looked quite descriptive, but I ended up reading it very easily and quite fast. I loved the way it was written.

I was also surprised by the subjective third-person narration, which I found a little confusing at first, but the good storyline erased all my doubts about the book and I really enjoyed reading it.

Both characters felt realistic to me (though I don’t know a lot about the life of pro tennis players), and I really loved the way they interacted and the development of their relationship.

The suspense part of the story was well developed and kept me captivated till the end of the book!

Review – Fragile Line by Brooklyn Skye

FragileLine

The story

It can happen in a flash. One minute she’s kissing her boyfriend, the next she’s lost in the woods. Sixteen-year-old Ellie Cox is losing time. It started out small… forgetting a drive home or a conversation with a friend. But her blackouts are getting worse, more difficult to disguise as forgetfulness.

When Ellie goes missing for three days, waking up in the apartment of a mysterious guy—a guy who is definitely not her boyfriend, her life starts to spiral out of control. Perched on the edge of insanity, with horrific memories of her childhood leaking in, Ellie struggles to put together the pieces of what she’s lost—starting with the name haunting her, Gwen. Heartbreakingly beautiful, this poignant story follows one girl’s harrowing journey to finding out who she really is.

My review

What a captivating read! I took my time for this one. It started kind of slow, but this story really grew on me, and I really enjoyed it.

I really liked how the story was builtliving things through Ellie’s eyes, and wonderug wha was wrong with her, just like she did herself.

I thought while reading, that the characters were accurate (though my teenage years are far behind now).

What happened, and it was quite a surprise t me, was that I also liked Gwen and Griffin a lot, maybe even more than Ellie and Shane. There was not really a good and a wrong character, but two complex ones.

I’m just a little disappointed though that things didn’t go any further between Ellie and Lexi. I kind of felt like that part of the story was left undone.

To sum things up : an intriguing story with great characters!
