The story

After a series of blasts force Beatrice Hicks and her family into their prepper bunker, they emerge to discover they are among the survivors of a nuclear apocalypse. Fighting against rogue groups and coping with deaths are just some of the adjustments Beatrice must make to survive, but how will she maintain her humanity after the blast?

The review

5 stars!

What an incredible, emotional, awesome read!

Beatrice Hicks’ life is completely shattered when, at age 10, the worlds ends. We then follow Beatrice growing up in this post-apocalytic world from age 10 to 18.

“The only thing that spreads more quickly than fire is panic, and our entire community had been consumed in both.”

I am completely stunned by what I’ve just experienced. The concept of this novel was totally original. Usually in YA post apocalytic books, the characters are already teenagers, most often 16 or 17. But living the apocalypse through the eyes of a child was a really smart idea. It allowed the reader to understand Bea’s character so much better, knowing what she had to live through : growing up in a world gone crazy, having to deal at such a young age with violence, death of loved ones and an unkown future.

“Burials are never fair, no matter who you are burying. No one should have to put anyone they love in the ground.”

The style of the writing was simple yet beautiful, and also completely controlled… a real emotional rollercoaster at times, and definitely a page turner! So much happened to her, yet the story remained plausible, and that is the strength of this novel to me. Bea managed to stay human, even in inhuman conditions.

At the end of the book, Sarah Perlmutter explains the The Blast is an ‘introduction’ to Isla’s story. It gave the book an other dimension to me. It suddenly felt like I had just got a hint of a family portrait, and I will definitely read Isla’s trilogy when it is released!
